Children with Autism benefit from language and speech therapy
Most individuals with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder present some difficulties with speech, language or both. Some individuals may have not be able to speak or understand spoken language and may find it challenging to communicate in general. They can certainly develop communication skills – and may even develop spoken language skills over time.
Speech therapists focus on:
- Non-verbal communication – This may include teaching gestural communication or training with PECS (picture exchange cards), electronic talking devices, and other non-verbal communication tools.
Other individuals on the spectrum, such as those with a diagnosis of Aspergers, are likely to misuse and misunderstand language . They will benefit from training in:
- Speech pragmatics – Knowing how to say “good morning” is great but it is more imperative to know when, how and to whom you should say it.
- Conversation skills – Making statements is not the same as engaging another in the art of dialogue. Speech therapists may work on back-and-forth exchange.
- Concept skills – A person may be able to label/tact an abstract concept however this does not always reflect their ability to comprehend such concepts. People with ASD’s may find it very difficult to grasp ideas such as “justice,” and “liberty.” Speech therapists may work on building concept skills.
True to our multidisciplinary approach, all children with speech, language and communication needs are encouraged to receive speech therapy, which can be incorporated into other services or programs. This ensures the best possible opportunity for a successful learning outcome.
